What is a
Skills Matrix?
A skills matrix is an essential management tool; simply put, it is a grid that outlines 4 core elements
Team Members. All team members, including the team leader/manager should be listed on the Skills Matrix.
Skill / Competency. All skills, process or competency requirements of the team should be listed.
Current Capability. A true and fair reflection of the individuals current capability level should be outlined on the matrix.
Future Capability. An achievable / future / target level of capability should be outlined on the skills matrix.

What do we mean by the skill level, or capability policy?
To gain a true and fair reflection of individual and team capability, each team member should be rated X,1,2,3 or 4 against each skill/competency requirement on the skills matrix. The individual will then have an overall skills rating which takes into consideration the various ratings per skill/competency. By grouping individual capability you are able to understand team capability.
X -EXEMPT FROM LEARNING SKILL
The individual is exempt from learning this specific skill or competency. The overall scoring will reflect that this skill is exempt, thus ensuring an individual can reach 100% capability vs. what is required of them. You can change them from X-Exempt to Level 1 at anytime (and vise-versa).
1 -REQUIRED TO LEARN - NOT YET CAPABLE
The individual may have begun training, but has not completed the majority of the training required. They are not yet aware of the quality and throughput requirements.
2 -TRAINING STARTED - DEVELOPING CAPABILITY
This individual is nearing completion of all training requirements. They may be able to perform the skill, however they are yet to evidence the quality and throughput requirements.
3 -CAPABLE - TRAINING FINISHED
This individual has completed all training and critically has evidenced that they can perform the skill to the required standard (quality and throughput).
4 -SUBJECT EXPERT - CAN TRAIN OTHERS
In order to 'rapidly' up-skill a team you need to be able to perform multiple training sessions per day. Being able to identify subject matter experts helps you to reach this level. These individuals should share in the team's plan to develop skill, taking ownership to develop others in these specific skills area.
